Routine guide

A bedtime routine that ends the same way every night

Eight steps from tidying up to lights out. The same order, every night, so the ending stops being a negotiation.

Bedtime is rarely hard because of the tasks. It is hard because it is the end of the day and the end of everything the child was doing. A routine that always runs the same way makes the ending predictable, and predictable endings are much easier to accept than surprising ones.

What actually helps

  • Start earlier than feels necessary. A rushed bedtime routine is the one that falls apart.
  • Give the first step a warning. Ten minutes before tidying up is the single highest-value change most families make.
  • Keep the story as a step, not a reward. A step that always happens is calming; a reward that might not is not.
  • End on the same step every night, even on the nights that went badly.

What if bedtime goes wrong halfway through?

Skip forward and finish the routine anyway. Getting to the last step matters more than getting every step. A routine that ends properly on a bad night is what makes the next night easier.

Use this routine

Free for one child and three routines. You can change every step.

Your child sees one step at a time

Not the whole list. The step they are on, big and clear, with the next one quiet underneath, and a count of what is already done. That is the entire child experience, and it is why it works when a chart on the fridge stops working.
